Who we are

About Friends of Iceland

The Ottawa chapter of the Icelandic National League of North America — a warm, inclusive community celebrating Icelandic culture, heritage, and friendship.

Who we are

Friends of Iceland – Ottawa (legal name FRIENDS OF ICELAND/VINIR ISLANDS) is the Ottawa chapter of the Icelandic National League of North America (INLNA), the umbrella organization representing Icelandic-Canadian and Icelandic-American clubs across the continent. We are an inclusive gathering place for anyone interested in Icelandic culture, history, language, and heritage — members of Icelandic descent and anyone drawn to Iceland and its traditions are equally welcome.

Our Mission

Friends of Iceland – Ottawa celebrates and shares Icelandic culture, heritage, and language throughout Canada's National Capital Region. As the Ottawa chapter of the Icelandic National League of North America (INLNA), we welcome people of Icelandic descent — and anyone drawn to Iceland — into an inclusive, year-round community. We pursue this through our programs: the Þorrablót midwinter feast, summer picnics, film nights, heritage and genealogy support, a members' newsletter, and participation in the wider INLNA network of Icelandic-Canadian and Icelandic-American clubs.

What we do

Our year-round programs bring the community together and keep Icelandic culture alive in the National Capital Region:

  • ÞorrablótOur midwinter feast of traditional Icelandic food, music, and readings.
  • Summer PicnicAn outdoor family gathering in the warmer months.
  • Film NightsScreenings of Icelandic cinema, subtitled in English.
  • Heritage & GenealogyHelp tracing Icelandic roots and family history.
  • Community NetworkConnecting people across the Icelandic-Canadian community.
  • NewsletterA twice-yearly newsletter of club news and events.
  • INLNA EventsAccess to gatherings across the wider North American league.
